What you can track
You can create a component with any name, up to 20 characters. Common examples include:- Chain — typically replaced every 2,000–4,000 km depending on drivetrain and conditions
- Rear tire / Front tire — typically replaced every 3,000–8,000 km
- Cassette — typically replaced every 10,000–15,000 km
- Brake pads — distance varies widely by surface and conditions
- Cleats — tracked by distance or hours of use
- Insoles — typically replaced every 500–1,000 km for running shoes
- Any custom part you name yourself
If you set no alert distance and no alert hours, the component will still accumulate totals, but you will never receive a notification. Set at least one threshold to benefit from automatic alerts.
Setting up components

Open the Gear page
Navigate to Gear in the main menu. All your Strava bikes and shoes appear here. Gear items that already have a GearWear configuration show their components and current totals. Gear without a configuration appears in the list at the bottom.

Create or open a GearWear configuration
Click the + button next to a gear item to create a new configuration, or click an existing gear card to open its edit page. On the edit page you see all existing components plus an Add new component card.

Add a component
Click Add new component. A dialog opens with the following fields:

A short, unique name for this part (e.g.,
Chain, Rear tire, Cleats). Maximum 20 characters. Each component on the same gear item must have a unique name.number
The distance already accumulated on this component before you start tracking. Set to
0 for a brand-new part; enter the existing mileage if the component is already in use.number

Send an early warning when usage reaches this percentage of the threshold. Options are 50%, 80%, or disabled. Useful for ordering parts in advance.

Save the component
Click Save component. The component appears on the gear’s edit page with a progress bar showing current usage against the threshold.

Save the configuration
After adding all the components you want, click Save configuration to persist the entire GearWear setup.
Default components
If you haven’t added any components yet, the edit page offers a Use defaults button. For bikes the defaults are Chain, Cassette, Rear tire, Front tire, and Brake pads. For shoes the default is a single Shoes component. The suggested alert distances are pre-filled using typical replacement intervals (3,500 km for a chain in metric, 2,200 mi in imperial, and so on). You can adjust any of these values after applying the defaults.Alerts and notifications
When a component’s running total reaches its alert threshold:- An in-app notification appears in Strautomator.
- An email alert is sent to the address on your account (if you have one set).
Resetting a component after replacement
After you replace a component, zero out its counter so tracking starts fresh.1
Open the gear edit page
Go to Gear and click on the bike or shoe whose component you replaced.

Click Reset
Find the component card and click the Reset button. A confirmation dialog shows the current distance and hours about to be cleared.

Confirm the reset
Click Reset in the dialog. Strautomator records the reset in the component’s history — storing the date and the total distance and hours at the time of the reset — then sets both counters to zero and clears any pending alert flags.
You can only reset a component once per calendar day. If you reset by mistake, the history entry is still recorded and the component restarts from zero. Resets are not stored when Privacy Mode is enabled in your account preferences.
Viewing component history
Each component keeps a full log of past resets. On the gear edit page, scroll down to the History section to see a table of reset dates alongside the cumulative distance and hours at each reset. This gives you a record of how long each part lasted, which is useful for planning future replacements.Usage delay
By default, Strautomator waits 2 days before crediting an activity’s distance to your gear components. This gives you time to correct the gear assignment on a recently synced activity before the totals are updated.- Free plan: delay is adjustable (default 2 days).
- PRO plan: delay can be reduced to 1 day. Activities whose gear was changed by an automation are updated instantly.
